Definition of sober

Webster’ s definition of sobriety is

1 a: not intoxicated

b: abstaining from drinking alcohol or taking intoxicating drugs: refraining from the use of addictive substances

This is a fun topic. Mainly because it becomes controversial, as do most things these days, however it does not need to be.

Break it down to its simplicity, not intoxicated. Then all you have to do is answer the question, am i intoxicated? No? Cool, you are sober, for now.

To live a sober life, is a different definition. Never intoxicated, refraining from the use of addictive substances. This is always where the fun starts :)

This is where some will say caffeine and nicotine are drugs, and yes by their definition they are. So what’s the difference between that and alcohol or cocaine or meth or the long list we do not need to add to? To be flat out honest, I do not know. What I do know, is I drink more caffeine then most people, and I consider myself to live a sober life. Am I wrong? Possibly. Do I care what others think about that situation? Absolutely not.

The point is, in my opinion, we put so much emphasis on words and definitions that we lose the point that whatever someone is doing to better their life is just that, IT IS THEIR LIFE. Whatever defines you as a person, and whatever makes you “sober” is what you view as the best possible way to live your life, and that is amazing.

I am not one of those sober advocates that tells people “you are doing it wrong!”, in my humble of humble opinions, there is no monopoly on sobriety. There is no “wrong way” to do this thing. I believe if you set out each day to be a good person and give a little back to the world by helping someone else along this journey of life, and you’re not going out of your way to hurt people, thats what matters most. I try not to put so much power to words, because they are just words, and we are all defined differently in our own way, in our own world.
